Text Case Converters: Styles, Rules, and Edge Cases
snake_case, camelCase, PascalCase, title case, and sentence case each have rules and traps. Here is how I convert cases safely. Text case conversion is one of those tasks that seems too simple to need a tool, until you try to do it by hand on a thousand lines. Converting a column of database names from snake_case to camelCase, capitalizing titles properly, or screaming a set of constants to UPPER_CASE are all tasks that are trivial for ten lines and error-prone for a hundred. A case converter handles them instantly and correctly. Here is how I use case converters and the conventions behind each case style. Know the Case Styles and Their Uses Each case style serves a convention in a specific context. snake_case, with words separated by underscores, is common in database column names, Python variables, and configuration keys. camelCase, with the first word lowercase and subsequent words capitalized, is common in JavaScript variables and function names. PascalCase, where every word is capitalized, is common in class names and type names. UPPER_CASE, with all words uppercase and highlight-separated, is common in constants. kebab-case, with hyphens, is common in URLs and CSS class names. Converting between these is not just a matter of changing separators. More tutorials are on the KitCraft Blog.
